Let’s face it…sometimes working out can be a bit boring and other times is real drag. We know if we skip a day or two, we can fall into a bad habit and it will be more difficult to get back into a routine.

I often ask myself, why do some individuals strongly dislike working-out, while those same people love to go dancing?  And why does a boring drive to the office seem much less so when we turn on the radio to our favorite music?

exercise musicMusic has the amazing ability to energize.  Given the right beat, lyrics, and sound, music has the power to turn an undesirable activity — even exercise — into…well…fun!  This is why most people decide to put on headphones and listen to their favorite tunes while breaking a sweat.

Music provides the right kind of distraction, where you can lose yourself in the song without realizing that you just did a dozen sit-ups.  Not only does it help you “get in the zone” but it also increases your effort as well. You feel the need to keep pace with the beat.  Exercise and music go together like donuts and icing (Oh no! Did I just say that?)

Music encourages us to perform and train for our best and it lifts our mood. We feel more productive and are more likely to reach our goals with a good rhythm. In addition, “getting in tune” allows us to make more productive decisions, allowing us to push ourselves harder, and even choose to eat healthier. It’s almost magical!

When choosing a song, make sure it is something that will get you going. Most Michael Jackson songs will do it for pop lovers, AC/DC and Van Halen for those who feel the need to rock-out during their routine. If Hip-Hop is your thing? Try songs from Flo Rida and Taio Cruz!

Over time as you consistently listen to upbeat music, your mind will adjust in response and soon enough, you will be feeling pumped every day!

Be sure to take frequent rests and breaks while working out. While your headphones are in, you might get too into the workout and you do not want to over strain your body, especially if you are new to the exercise program.  And be sure to keep hydrated — keep a bottle of water handy.
